OI On the big screen:
OK, if you scrolled down this far you're either far more impatient than I am or you already know the name Nabil Shaban, which makes you more of a Whovian than I could ever be.
Nabil was born in Amman Jordan in 1953. He transferred to London for medical care, shortly thereafter, Jordan is a great place, but this was 1953. Even the US Military said that Boys were exhibitors and girls were carriers at that point in history. He Studied at the University of Surrey and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for 'services and promotion of Disability Arts'. That was undoubtedly a great day for Nabil.
But I'm thinking his NEXT project may be to change the name of that award to “services in the promotion of Arts by folks considered disabled”, or something a tad more direct. But that's just me. While at University he polished his writing skills on the school paper and started writing and promoting projects all the way to the role of 'Sil' in Vengeance on Varnos a Dr. Who series in 1985. Personally, not having the guts to be an actor (I was poor WAY too long pursuing my chosen profession, whatever that was), I would believe that being a Janitor on the longest running Sci- Fi TV series on planet earth would be reason for excitement.
But playing a character so well they bring it back multiple times must be a huge feather in ones cap! Dr. Who is not his only credit, it may not even be his largest, but being a Sci Fi guy made Sil one of the ones most meaningful in my area. Acting, producing writing and directing truly the triple crown! All this while dealing with a genetic issue that makes many of us want to pull the covers up over our collective heads and say “Nope, not gonna ‘Adult’ today!”
